Pak-US relations and military bases
Pakistan-US relations have been volatile due to various issues, whether it is Pakistan's relations with China or Pakistan's role in the Afghan peace process. However, no formal policy on Pak-US relations has emerged from the Biden administration, but the current US administration seems to appreciate Pakistan's role in the Afghan peace process.
Pakistan has always tried to keep the US in balance with Pakistan and India and not interfere in Pak-China relations. It is being said at the official level that Pakistan is moving from global politics to global trade but The basis of Pak-US relations has historically been political. The basis of relations between the two countries is still political today, but the United States still needs Pakistan's cooperation in Afghanistan.
Once again, official and backdoor contacts between Pakistan and the United States have been intensified. Some quarters are citing this as the reason for playing a better role in the Afghan peace process. The United States believes that Pakistan will provide ground and air access to the United States. US Secretary of Defense Indo-David Halloway told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Pakistan would extend all possible cooperation and assistance to the United States for Afghanistan. However, Pakistani officials appear to be rejecting the claim, with Pakistani President Arif Ali refusing to provide any military bases in a recent interview. After the discussion in the media, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also strongly denied that we do not intend to give bases to the United States.
Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby called the talks between Lloyd Austin and the Pakistani army chief useful. In this regard, US officials are calling the meeting between US National Security Adviser Jack and Pakistan's National Security Adviser Moeed Yousuf in Geneva useful. According to analysts, the escalating violence in Afghanistan has prompted the United States to intervene if the violence escalates. The presence of such bases is essential. However, Pakistan is not the only option but no decision has been taken in the end.
Pakistan's military cooperation with the United States spans 70 years. During this time, relations between the two countries have been volatile. Pakistan had allegedly given the Badaber air base on the outskirts of Peshawar to the United States for use during the Cold War in 1960. After 9/11, various bases for Pakistan's cooperation with the United States were used by the US military. In which the solar base air base based in Balochistan was used the most. From this base American warplanes continued to fly for various attacks in Afghanistan. Apart from this, Shahbaz Airbase in Jacobabad was also used by the US military. According to some reports, cooperation was also maintained at Chaklala Airbase in Rawalpindi with the US authorities regarding the administrative matters of the Pakistan Army. The solar airbase was evacuated from the United States after the attack on the Salala check post. A statement issued by the Pakistan Army at the time said that there was no US presence at any of the airbases.
It may be recalled that on November 26, 2011, Pakistani security personnel were killed in an alleged clash between Pakistani and NATO forces at Saleh near the Pak-Afghan border. The Pakistani military had alleged that US and NATO forces opened unprovoked fire on Pakistani border posts, killing 28 Pakistani soldiers. Pakistan also suspended NATO supplies for several months.
Defense analyst Brigadier (retd) Syed Nazir said that Shamsi Air Base, Shahbaz Air Base in Jacobabad and an airbase in Balochistan remained under US use. According to him, the United States was also given a special air corridor, from where even our own air force flights could not operate. He said that at present the United States is saying that after the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, non-actors and the Taliban in Afghanistan could infiltrate Pakistan, which poses security threats to Pakistan. In such a situation, Pakistan will need the help of the United States for security. Syed Nadeem said that at present there is a difficult situation for Pakistan because Pakistan is also being threatened by terrorists. While the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor program may also face difficulties.
It should be noted that the United States is expressing concerns over the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, but giving military bases to the United States is nothing new for Pakistan. Given the current Western situation and the situation in the region, this decision will be difficult for Pakistan ۔ It remains to be seen how Pakistan will not be able to use its foreign policy to anger the United States as well as China.
