Karachi: Strike of ice factories has created problems for fishermen
In Sindh, the ban on fishing is lifted in August but the strike of icebergs at the beginning of the season has created problems for fishermen while the unavailability of ice will also affect other citizens.
Due to disagreement over prices, the owners of ice factories have announced to cut off the supply of ice, saying that the increase in prices has become inevitable as a result of increase in electricity prices and implementation of 20% GST. However, ice dealers say that the price of ice has already gone up by more than Rs 120 in a year, so the burden of any further increase cannot be borne.
A meeting of ice factory owners and dealers was held at Karachi Fisheries Harbor in which President of Ice Factory Honors Association Masood Agha and President of Ice Dealers Association Haji Nisar Muhammad and other officials participated but the meeting could not agree on prices. Later, the factory owners announced that they would immediately cut off the ice supply indefinitely.
The biggest loss of ice supply disruption will be to the fisheries sector where, according to ice factory owners, 70% of the total ice is used. The new fishing season started on August 1 after the two-month ban imposed during June and July was lifted, but as soon as the season started, the ice factory owners went on strike, causing distress to the fishermen while supplying ice. The suspension will also affect ordinary citizens.
Speaking to SAMAA Digital, President of Ice Factory Owners Association Masood Agha said that 17% general sales tax is already being levied on electricity bills from ice factories. Now 17% GST has been imposed on sale of ice in the federal budget. At the same time, it has made it a condition to get the identity card from the ice dealers and to do the entire transaction from its own account and those who do not give the identity card have been asked to take 20% GST.
He said that the prices of electricity have also gone up due to which the increase in the price of ice has become inevitable but the dealers are not willing to increase the prices and they are not cooperating even with regard to the identity card which caused the supply to be cut off.
According to Danish Malik, Information Secretary, Ice Factory Owners Association, a block of ice was being sold at Rs. 320. The price of electricity increases to. The price of a block should be Rs. 430.
Nisar Mohammad, president of the Ice Dealers Association, said the ice factory owners had been informed at a meeting on Monday that ice prices had already risen sharply and launch owners and fishermen could not afford further increases.
According to Nisar Mohammad, the highest use of ice in the city is in the fisheries sector. The use of ice is mandatory in the fishholes of launches with the help of which the prey is not spoiled. Besides, ice is also used in auction halls and markets at all stages.
According to ice factory owner Amir Saleh Memon, there are about 300 ice factories in the city, of which 70% of the ice produced is used in the fisheries sector, while the remaining 30 are bought by other citizens and beverage sellers.
