Russia warned of a civil war after the withdrawal of NATO from Afghanistan
Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has warned of a civil war after the withdrawal of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops from Afghanistan.
According to Russian and international news agencies, while sharply criticizing NATO, he said that NATO remained in Afghanistan for 20 years but could neither establish peace there nor establish strong state institutions.
Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has made it clear that the situation in Afghanistan could worsen in the next two years.
Defense Minister Shoigu said it was widely expected that the civil war in Afghanistan would resume after the withdrawal of NATO forces.
He said that after NATO, there were fears of deteriorating living standards of the people in Afghanistan, large-scale displacement and the spread of extremism in neighboring countries.
Russia has repeatedly called for a coordinated policy in Afghanistan during the presence of NATO forces in the country, the Russian defense minister said. He said the Russians' hatred of the NATO alliance was far greater.
