Myanmar: Martial law enforced in several areas of Yangon, 38 more protesters killed



 Myanmar's ruling military junta has announced martial law in various parts of the country's largest city, Yangon. There were also reports of 38 people being killed by security forces on Sunday.


Since last month's military coup, supporters of civil supremacy have continued to resist the military's takeover of power, while deadly operations are on the rise.

Thirty-four people were killed in Yangon, while four more were reported in the Bagu and Mandalay areas of the Pakistani city of Kachin, according to aid groups and local media.

The military junta has imposed martial law in the two troubled villages of Haleng Thar Yar and adjoining Shwepitha.

Myanmar's military declared a state of emergency after seizing power on February 1, after which civilian leaders were expelled or taken into custody.

"The State Administrative Council has taken steps to increase security and restore law and order in the country, with the Yangon Regional Commander being given administrative, judicial and military powers," according to an announcement on state TV.

Protesters against the military coup took a new approach in Yangon's commercial district with dark black covers and lit candles on Saturday and Sunday night. Protests usually take place during the day in this area. These dark rallies were also held in Mandalay and other areas.

The death toll from Sunday's military coup by security forces has risen to more than 100, the aid group said.
